While Minnesota may be known as the Land of 10,000 Lakes, other famous features of the land are its caves. Many caves in the state are located along the Mississippi River Valley, however, there are a plethora of others scattered throughout the state. Exploring caves is a great way to be active and utilize recreational vehicles. Here, our experts at Fractional Toys will walk you through different caves to explore outside the Twin Cities area.

Niagara Cave - Harmony, MN

This vast, underground cave was discovered in the early 1900s by a local farmer. Since that time, it has been turned into a tourist spot. Niagara Cave offers one-hour guided tours through the cavern highlighting fossils, rock formations, a waterfall, and an underground wedding chapel. The cave is located in rural Harmony, MN, and has been consistently ranked as one of the top 10 caves in the country by various sources.

There are many local campgrounds that allow you to use your motorhome or camper rental. Additionally, the area around Harmony has over 60 miles of paved bike trails, which allows you to explore during your trip.

Forestville Mystery Cave State Park - Preston, MN

This unique cavern is the longest cave in the state and covers 13 miles underground. Because of the many features and the length of the cave, there are a variety of tours available, all of which can be found here. Each of the tours explores the fossil, water, and other rock formation features of the cave.

Mystery Cave is also near seven local campgrounds. Each of these unique Preston-area campgrounds allows you to utilize your Fractional Toys motorhome or camper rental. One lies on a golf course, one on a storied farm, and one on the country fairgrounds.

Crystal Cave - Spring Valley, WI

Crystal Cave is located just over an hour from the Twin Cities over the Wisconsin border. This cave was discovered in the late 1800s and is the longest known cave in the state. As with many other cave tours, the tour of Crystal Cave explores the fossil, rock, and water formations formed millions of years ago. Additionally, this tour delves into the history of the many species of bats that live in the cavern.

The large parking lot around the cave allows for large vehicles, such as campers and motorhomes. There are many great camping sites in the area, such as Highland Ridge. This campsite is on Eau Galle Lake and is great when you’re in town to explore the surrounding area.
